I had a list of things I needed to worry about. They stayed toward the back of my head, whispering doubt. Every once in a while they’d get louder and take over my thinking while I unloaded the dishwasher or made the bed. Sometimes they shouted over the vacuum, “It’s gonna be bad!!! Really bad!!!”
Did I just tell you I have voices in my head? hmmm…
Start over here.
Being the spiritual guru that I am, I NEVER worry! We’ve studied the Dave Ramsey courses, so naturally we have a nice emergency fund. We’re at the age now that after working hard for many years, we are able to take care of many missionaries, not to mention bless our local church WAAAY above our tithe.
Our health is great because we’ve followed all the dietary laws in Leviticus; plus working out at the YMCA [emphasis on the C] is a pleasure for us because we’ve made it a habit almost as important as church attendance. We also take turns on the treadmill at home each night instead of watching television. We decided LONG ago that it’s just better for us. You will never find clothes piled on it either.
Plus, we invested in real estate very early in our marriage so that when we arrived at the golden age of fifty seven, we’d be set for life. Everything is paid for and now we can go on short term mission trips, coming home to our vacation property on the coast. [Christians go to the coast; Pagans go to the beach.]The view is spectacular and we love sharing it with our grown children and their families. They spend months at a time with us because we can’t seem to get enough of each other. Everyone is so spiritually minded.
Could I interest you in some property?
For some reason that’s what I pictured life would be like if I walked closely to the Lord and obeyed His Word. But here’s what it really looks like:
- Emergency funds get used on emergencies. Then the Lord provides a different way.
- Strength and health fail so our Creator can show His strength in our weakness.
- The course of our life changes because unlike us, God actually sees the future.
- Some days are filled with such deep sorrow that we wonder if the Lord cares at all.
- Other days contain so much blessing that our barns overflow and our hearts nearly burst with the joy of His grace
- And SOMETIMES we’re out of work for a couple years, our house will not sell, and birds take a dump on our Life is Good shirt.
Dear sweet Lord of glory,
Help me to remember that You are in charge and I am not. Thank You for Your plan. I submit to Your will for my life, no matter what that brings today.
“Who else has held the oceans in His hand? Who has measured off the heavens with His fingers?
Who else knows the weight of the earth or has weighed the mountains and hills on a scale?
Who is able to advise the Spirit of the LORD? Who knows enough to give Him advice or teach Him?
Has the LORD ever needed anyone’s advice? Does He need instruction about what is good?”
-Isaiah 40:12-14
Wonderful post! I needed this reminder. It’s amazing how we think our lives will turn out and make plans toward that view but thank God He knows the plans He has for us!

You had me going there for a while and feeling guilty! Although it would be great to live the life you mentioned first, it wouldn’t involve much in the way of faith. Thank you for reminding me of hoe the “necessities of life” often aren’t. May God bless you and your family for your faith and example and your willingness to share your thoughts with me so often! It is something I look forward to reading!

You are so right Glenda. A life like that would require very little in the faith department. Our favorite thought is that God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness. What hope for us “weaklings!”
