I went on a rant and explained a few things to God. I reminded Him of our service and asked Him why we have to experience one more disappointment. Suddenly I felt like the prodigal’s brother.
“All these years I’ve slaved for you and never once refused to do a single thing you told me to! And in all that time you never gave me even one young goat for a feast with my friends.” –Luke 15:29
Even as the words poured forth in my heart, I knew better.
Didn’t we just have two parties last week? Wasn’t our home filled Monday with the closest friends we’ve ever had and all kinds of tailgate food? Didn’t we follow it up Tuesday with family celebrating the birthdays of my sisters? Didn’t we often plug up the party lights just because our life is so good?
Now when the crud hit the fan does the Lord no longer care for me?
Okay… so now I feel like the prodigal.
We’ve wasted our life on riotous living and homemade eggrolls. [Click here for the recipe.]
David reminded me that the father in the story of the prodigal reached out to both sons. He literally ran to the one who had lived in sin when he saw him returning. The wayward son’s decision to live as a slave in order to make things up to his father was never allowed to be uttered. He was gathered into his daddy’s arms and thrown a party.
The obedient son who stayed at home was so busy working that he considered himself a slave as well. His father left the party to search for him so he wouldn’t miss the fun. “Come celebrate!” he invited. “We’re family and we’re together again. It’s a wonderful day.” In the old man’s heart, both children were valuable and loved; not for what they had done, but just for being his.
I think I too have a slave heart. Somewhere along the way I decided that if I serve God diligently He owes me a party life. And like the prodigal, when I mess up it’s logical that God will allow me back into His family if I promise to serve Him better.
Perhaps it’s time to just go back inside the house and plug up the party lights.
I am His child, no matter what.
Ouch! Get off of my toes!! Awesome post thanks for sharing and your prayers.

You know… you don’t know what the neighbor’s thought about all that hoopla in that time of prodigal-ness..but you do know that they were there to help celebrate/eat/enjoy party lights with them ….so if you need somebody to party with…I’m your gal!!!
“May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation — those good things that are produced in your life by Jesus Christ — for this will bring much glory and praise to God.”

I’ve been singing this precious old song: “The God of the mtns. is still God in the valley. When things go wrong, we know that He’ll make them right. The God of the good times, is still God in the bad times. The God of the day, is still God in the night.”
