The new parents became increasingly concerned as the trusted pediatrician asked numerous questions while examining their nine month old son.
“Does he pull up on things?”
“No…”
“When he’s on his tummy does he scrunch his rear up?”
“No…”
“Does he ever go from sitting to lying down?”
“No…”
“How about scooting?”
“No…”
“Is he rolling over a lot?”
“No…”
“Is he making an effort to crawl?”
“Nope. He just sits and plays and smiles.”
“Hmm…”
“I think what we have here is an extreme case of contentment,” the wise doctor diagnosed.
Apparently baby Caleb is already following his daddy’s relaxed nature. Jason is one of the most laid back men on the face of the earth. In fact Caleb’s mom Sara used to be content to watch the world go by as a baby as well… except she didn’t smile. Her demeanor resembled quiet observation, as though she had some secret wisdom of how the world should actually function. Her expression seemed to say, “As soon as I can talk I shall straighten this place out.”
Who knew that she would grow up to become a tenacious basketball player, using her pointy elbows as defensive arsenal. Her tiny frame kept much larger girls at bay by her sheer determination not to be scored upon. Later when hard work and excellent grades earned her the privilege of becoming a lawyer, she spent her intern days fighting child predators. Currently she works with mentally challenged adults in her church. Combine that with motherhood and legal work for missionaries, the little girl we worried about because she was too quiet has quite the influence.
I love their doctor’s diagnosis.
Extreme contentment.
Something very few of us have ever been accused of. Perhaps baby Caleb is saving all his energy for more important things than scrunching his rear up and fighting the other kids in the nursery for toys. Maybe like his mom and dad, quiet strength will lead him to great things.
What a prospect!
Love this!

There for a moment I was getting so sick thinking something was wrong and the doctor was going to say something terrible. What a great surprise….wonderful doctor! And I remember Sara as a little girl. She was very quite, very tiny but so sweet. She has grown to be a remarkable young lady and a wonderful Mother. With the help of Dad and all the clan, Caleb will do great things! Love all of you!

In this world of information overload, it’s so hard not to compare what our young children should be doing, are doing, etc. Love this doctor’s response! May we all seek God’s peace and “extreme contentment!” 🙂

I love this Lynna! Caleb is so much like his mom was at that age, just watching things around him, taking it all in.

Uncle Milton calls him the most “chilled” kid he has ever seen. He also reminds me of his Grandpa John.
