I felt the resentment rising up inside. An acquaintance put their house up for sale. It seemed that everything they touched turned to gold. I knew that even with a failing market their house would be snapped up like a treasure, no matter how high they priced it. Our own “treasure” had been lingering on the MLS for years.
Sure enough, someone came along and paid them a boatload of money.
In the meantime, our youngest daughter and her husband prayed for a child for eight long years. It seemed that every teenage girl in the county was pregnant with a kid they didn’t want. Other friends and relatives rejoiced in babies being added to their families… while we waited.
My health and strength failed. I prayed for healing, but it would not come.
Why Lord? Why do You choose to bless everyone around except us?
Then one day, our greatest prayer was answered. God poured out the sweetest gift on Hannah and Brandon by blessing them with two babies at once.
As others see her pushing a double stroller filled with cherubs, they could easily be resentful if they’ve been waiting and praying for their own little ones.
They don’t know her story... just as I don’t know the story of the couple who seem to have the Midas touch.
I guess for every person being blessed, there are those still waiting for an answer. Thankfully, God is not Santa Claus with a bag that can only hold a limited number of gifts.
I’m no spiritual guru… obviously.
But this I’m learning:
As others are blessed I have a choice.
Resentment that He blessed their lives instead of mine or…
Rejoicing that He still answers prayers.
Waiting on God feels a little like waiting on Christmas. When we were kids, it took FOREVER to get here. Thankfully He has the date circled in red. His best gifts are already wrapped and ready…
And joyful anticipation is a whole lot more fun than resentment.
“I pray that from His glorious, unlimited resources He will empower you with inner strength through His Spirit.” -Ephesians 3:16
