We were off to the lake for three whole days! Sunshine here we come! Peace and quiet, beautiful views, and blue herons would replace television, internet and squirrels. Dang squirrels! The first morning up, I slathered sunscreen upon my pasty white self and proceeded to the porch with my coffee to wait for the clouds to blow over. As the sun tentatively peeped out enough so that I could tell which part of the yard was shaded, I ran to get my chair cushion and magazine. When I returned it was pouring down rain. Drats!
So we settled into a day of reading Our State magazines. We have at least four months to catch up on. And it was nice. Who knew there were two hydrogen bombs accidently dropped on North Carolina which were five times as powerful as the one dropped on Hiroshima? One of them is still buried in a swamp near Faro, in Wayne County. [see Our State June 2012 issue]. Another similar mishap happened in Denton, NC which is way too close to home.
But I sure wish the sun would come out. I was going be brown before we go to the beach next week.
I was going to be skinny too… but I chose to put sugar in my coffee.
Oh well, maybe next year.
The second day was mostly cloudy but with less rain. My new grandboy came to see me. He loved the view. And so did we.
The third and last day the sun exploded at the crack of dawn in all its glory. Determined to soak it up before the clouds stole my day, I scurried outside to get brown.
About an hour later I was done. It was so hot I couldn’t bear another moment of sun. Even the screened porch with the ceiling fan twirling like a helicopter blade was unbearably hot. I was ready to go home.
All that wishing for sunshine, and the moment it was mine I quickly had enough. How was I to know that the days full of rain and clouds were actually what I needed and enjoyed the most!
There is definitely a life lesson in there somewhere.
I love the rainy days on the lake….
