When you were a kid, what did you dream of becoming? An astronaut? A fireman? Maybe a doctor or even president? I had the great aspiration to become a cowgirl. I would marry John Wayne, for that would make daddy very happy. Besides, Roy Rogers was already taken. I would have a beautiful horse named Lightening. She would come when I whistled and we would ride off to save those who needed saving. Of course I would wear a white hat and a six-shooter.
But the first time I was introduced to a horse up close and personal, well… one of us ran like lightening. Did you know that horses have very very large teeth? And they make snorting horse sounds? And their lips quiver and show their huge teeth right up past their gums?
Perhaps I was not meant to be a cowgirl after all.
We got the best gift last week. Some friends gave us a subscription to Our State Magazine. The contributors write about NC eateries, people, festivals, etc. One article gave recipes using ingredients from North Carolina companies and then gave a little background as to how some of them started their businesses.
The story was told of a family returning from church when their car hydroplaned and both parents were killed. The daughters, ages 3 and 11 months, went to live with their grandmother. As a retired nurse, she and her daughter, who was about to enter medical school, put their own dreams on hold in order to raise the girls. In an effort to generate much needed funds, they took jars of homemade salsa to the farmers market. Now they run a successful business selling more than eighty products in specialty stores all over North Carolina. It’s called Yah’s Best because when one of the granddaughters was young, she couldn’t say “Grandma.” So she called her “Yah.”
I love this quote from the article.
“And within every little family is an ordinary person who’s a hero to somebody.”
Maybe you put your dreams on hold. Maybe they are yet to be realized. Often one dream is exchanged for another. But if you commit your dreams to the Lord, He will put in your heart the dream that is best.
That’s what He did for me. But first I had to listen when He urged me to leave a job I loved. Then I had to get very sick. Then I had to give up on a different dream. Then I had to give Him my spreadsheet. Then I had to quit fearing what others would think. Then I had to consume large quantities of chocolate. Then I had to be encouraged. [That’s where you came in.] And even better, the Lord isn’t through with me.
So what is your dream? Don’t ever think you are too old or too poor or too trapped in your circumstances to do what the Lord wants you to do. Just make sure it’s His dream before you quit your day job. He didn’t want me to run a coffee shop OR be a cowgirl. But we can all be a hero to somebody!

don’t really remember having a dream when I was younger, if I did I sure can’t remember now:-) I do know that being a mother and now a grandmother,I have put a lot of things on hold. But that’s what we do for our children and grandchildren out of love for them. I guess the only real dream (and I do mean dream) is maybe someday to have a catering business of down home cooking. Not that I’m such a great cook, but it’s something I like to do. Maybe that’s why God put me in a charge of a school cafeteria.

I am satisfied with where I am as of now but maybe someday I will be able to go to a foreign country and help the starving children there!! That is a dream of mine now!! 🙂
